SET UP

G starts in the crease standing up in the crouch position.  Coach stands 3-5 feet away.  Pucks are placed around the crease in a semi circle.

DRILL STEPS

G in his crouch poke checks the puck with a simple push of the arm keeping the stick in hand.  Coach controls the puck and shoots on G.  G goes behind each puck in his stance and poke checks the puck and then reacts to the shot from C.

PROGRESSION
For the 2nd time of poke checks place the pucks a foot or so further out.  G slides his hand all the way up the shaft of the stick and then poke checks.  C receives the puck and then shoots.

KEY TEACHING POINTS

Goalies need to work on keeping the stick on the ice for the poke check and a potential shot from the coach.

Quick Fire 1-1 Drill

SET UP

Forwards start in the 2 corners at one end. Defensemen are placed in the centre face-off circle. They move to the blueline when it is their turn.

DRILL STEPS

F1 starts the drill with a pass to D1, then skates towards the net to create a screen. D1 shoots the puck from the point. The drill continues with F1 starting to break out wide while receiving a pass from F2. F1 then continues down the wing and goes 1 on 1 against D1. F2 then continues the drill and makes a pass to D2 and skates to the net to create a screen. D2 receives the pass and shoots. F2 skates towards F3, gets a pass and goes 1 on 1 against D2. The drill is repeated alternating sides.

After completing each turn players come down the side of the boards opposite to the 1 on 1.

KEY TEACHING POINTS

Players work on short and long passing, making quick decisions, body management along the boards while angling.

Goalies work on screens shots from the point and reading 1 on 1 attacks down the wing.

Jun 26, 2010, 6:42 pm

SET UP

Defensemen work in groups of 2.  D1 starts at the blueline near boards.  D2 has a bunch of pucks in the corner.  D3 and D4 set up the same way on the other side of the zone.

DRILL STEPS

D2 starts the drill with a pass to D1.  D1 receives the pass and takes a quick shot on net.  D2 makes a 2nd pass and D1 receives the pass and skates in along boards and then takes a quick shot on net.  D2 makes a 3rd pass to D1 who then receives it and drags the puck along the blue line for a shot from the middle.  Once the 3 shots are done, D4 and D3 repeat the process from their side.  The drill is repeated until all Defensemen have shot the puck 3 times.

For variation have the Defenseman in the corner make lousy passes to the Defenseman on the blueline to improve puck control skills.

KEY TEACHING POINTS

Players work on puck control, quick release shooting, and hitting the net with each shot.

Goalies work on angles and footwork while stopping shots from the point.

Jun 26, 2010, 6:42 pm

SET UP

All players are set-up in 2 lines. 4 players are positioned at the bluelines and boards. X1 and O1 start the drill simultaneously. A bunch of pucks are with both lines in the corner.

 DRILL STEPS

X1 and O1 start the drill by skating with a puck each towards the player across the ice. Halfway across the ice, they pass the puck to X2 & O2 and continue to skate to where they passed the puck. When X2 and O2 receive the pass they skate towards the cross ice player (X3 and O3). X1 and O1 take the position of X2 and O2. X2 and O2 pass the puck while in stride halfway across the ice and skate to where they passed the puck. X3 and O3 receive the pass and skate into towards the goalie and shoot from the top of the circle. X2 and O2 take the place of X3 and O3 and wait for a pass.

After X3 and O3 shoot on goal they go in line in the closest corner. This is a quick moving drill.

KEY TEACHING POINTS

Players work on passing in stride, communication and keeping their heads up.

Goalies work on saves for shots from top of the circle with distractions.

Jun 26, 2010, 6:41 pm

SET UP

2 players - X1 and X2 are set-up at the top of the face-off circles with a bunch of pucks. One (G) goalie is at the top of the crease in the crouch ready position to take a shot from X1.

DRILL STEPS

X1 starts the drill by putting a soft lob near the net (area A) so the puck touches the boards and stops. G comes out to play the puck once it crosses the goal line. G passes the puck to X1 and then races back to the net to make a save from the shot. X1 stops the puck and shoots on net. X1 lobs a second puck a little bit farther away from the net. G comes out to play the puck after it goes across the goal line; passes the puck back to X1 and goes back in the net ready for the shot. The process is repeated for a 3 rd puck.

Once 3 pucks from 1 side are done the Goalie changes sides and repeats the process.

KEY TEACHING POINTS

Goalies work on playing the puck, recovering and getting back into position in the net quickly to make a save. The drill forces the goalie to skate to a loose puck and skate back to the crease quickly and then to be ready for a shot on goal.

Jun 26, 2010, 6:40 pm

SET UP

All players at one end in 2 lines. All the pucks are at the top of the Face-off circle. Both Goalies at the opposite end with 1 in the net.

DRILL STEPS

X1 is at the top of the circle with a puck. X2 is at the hash marks without a puck. On the Coach’s signal, X1 breaks away for a shot on net. X2 must catch him. The shot must take place from the slot.

Jun 26, 2010, 6:40 pm

SET UP

Pucks are put behind the net. 2 D participate in the drill at the same time along with a G in the net.

D1 starts off to either side of the net above the goal line and D2 stands in the high slot above the hash marks of the circles.

DRILL STEPS

D1 starts the drill by skating backwards towards the back of the net and picks up a puck. D1 pivots, picks up a puck and skates forwards carrying the puck to the other side of the net. As D1 passes the goal line beside the other side of the net, he passes the puck to D2. D2 shoots immediately on net. D1 then repeats the pattern - skates backwards behind the net, pivots, picks up a puck and goes to the other side and makes a pass. D2 skates full speed to the blue line and back in for another shot. The drill continues back and forth with passes from either side of the net.

KEY TEACHING POINTS

Players (D1) need to keep facing the shooter in the slot and move their feet quickly forwards and backwards. (D2) need to be ready to shoot as soon as the puck arrives.

Goalies need to be in position for the shot from the slot and move from side to side.

Previous Drills:

Jun 26, 2010, 6:39 pm

SET UP

Have all players line-up in single file below the hash marks of the face-off circle in a corner. Place pucks at the far blueline away from the players. Put four (4) cones in a square shape on the face-off circle near the pucks. Position three (3) players along the opposite side boards as stationary passing targets. Have one (1) Goalie in the net at a time.

DRILL STEPS

X1 starts the drill by skating forward around the face-off circle doing cross-overs. Once a full turn is done X1 continues straight to the blueline and stops. X1 faces the full length of the ice and does cross overs to the right (lifting the left leg and crossing over the right foot). X1 stops at the middle of the ice and skates forward to the centre ice. X1 stops at centre ice and faces the same direction and does the cross over going the other way (lift the right leg and crossing it over the left). X1 stops at the boards and skates forward to the pucks. X1 picks up a puck and stickhandles it towards the farthest cone and makes a sharp turn and skates diagonal to the upper cone. X1 goes around the cone and then the net. X1 skates around the net and then passes to O1. X1 skates full the length of the ice making quick passes to O2 then O3. X1 receives the pass from O3 and then takes a quick shot on G. X1 continues to the end of the line. X2 starts when X1 has done a full turn of the circle. X3 starts when X2 does a full turn of the circle.

KEY TEACHING POINTS

Players need to work on balance and agility not speed in this drill; they need to work on hand eye control when carrying the puck; they need to practice quick on and off the stick passing while keeping the feet moving.

Goalies need to work on watching the pass to the slot with a quick shot; they need to work on quick recovery from one shot to the next

Jun 26, 2010, 6:39 pm

SET UP

Coach © starts with all the pucks at the centre line. The Forwards (X) are in 4 lines. The Defensemen are along the boards opposite the Coach. In either net there are the 2 goalies.

DRILL STEPS

© dumps the puck around the boards. G comes out of the net and stops the puck, then passes to X1. X1 skates with the puck and passes to X2 to similate a breakout. X2 carries it over the red line and passes the puck to X3. After the pass X2 curls to the other wing. X1 meanwhile skates to the opposite wing and curls to the centre and goes back up the ice. Once X3 gets the puck he passes it to X2. X2 and X1 are now going on an attack. D1 jumps in from the blueline to the centre line and plays the 2 forwards as a 2 on 1. Once the players clear the zone © dumps the puck in the other direction and the same is repeated.

This drill progresses to a 3 on 2 whereby X3 joins the rush after the pass and D3 steps in along with D1. To make it game speed the last progression is allowing X4 to join as a backchecker.

KEY TEACHING POINTS

Players need to move the puck quickly out of the zone and then communicate through the neutral zone about where to curl. Defensemen need to work on jumping into the play and creating a tight gap.

Goalies need to work on stopping the puck and then making a quality pass to the outlet man.

Jun 26, 2010, 6:37 pm

SET UP

All pucks are placed in the middle of the centre circle. Players line-up in 2 lines lines along the cente ice red line. Each line begins on the outside of the cente ice face-off circle.

DRILL STEPS

Each line goes simultaneously. X1 and O1 in each line skates without a puck along the centre ice red line. While approaching the boards each player executes a big turn down ice returning along the blueline. X2 and O2 pass the puck. X1 and O1 touch pass the puck back to X2 and O2. X2 and O2 redirect the puck off the boards as X1 and O1 skate into it. X1 and O1 drives to the net for a shot.

For variation X1 and O1 stays around the net for a deflection or to play a rebound off the next shooter.

KEY TEACHING POINTS

Players need to execute the drill at top speed, have their sticks on ice at all times and drive the net after the shot for a rebound.

Goalies need to work on making sure the puck is frozen or steered to the corner.

Jun 26, 2010, 6:36 pm

SET UP

D1 and D2 start on blueline facing G1. 1 puck is placed behind either D. 2 lines of forwards are along the boards at the redline.  In both nets there are the 2 goalies.

DRILL STEPS

Once the whistle blows to start the drill, D2 and D1 skate backwards.  At the 2nd whistle the 2 D pivot and quickly look for the puck.  In this case, D2 picks up the loose puck, looks to see if D1 is open before passing.  D2 passes to D1 and upon receipt D1 turns up ice carrying the puck.  Meanwhile F1 and F2 cross lanes and timing skate to receive pass.  D1 head mans to F1 or F2 crossing in the neutral zone.  Once the pass is made to F1, F2 speeds up along boards to receive a quick up pass and attacks the net, down the side of the boards.

PROGRESSION

Addition of 1 D to have a 2 on 1 attack on G1.

KEY TEACHING POINTS

Players need to work on quick decision making, communication skills and timing skating - Defensemen talk to each other, move pucks quickly, Forwards change lanes to create options.

Goalies need to work on communication to Defenseman about loose pucks and making break aways saves from the side attack off the board.
